The election is coming. It's everywhere. It's been everywhere for a while now but it is getting thicker. You can feel the energy coming off those who still follow politics. Even if you don't follow politics, you can't escape the far-reaching tingle of the adrenaline coming off those who are convinced they are doing the right thing. Their candidate is the one who will make things better for generations to come. Their candidate will put more money in their pocket and less in the tax man's greedy hand.
I've honestly been surprised by how many are on this bandwagon. Pulpits are shaming those brothers and sisters who no longer play the game. I have heard some pastors and the people that they shepherd go so far as to say that those who don't vote aren't really followers of Christ Jesus.
What?!?! If my Bible says that, someone will have to show me where. My Bible does say to pray for those in authority over you. It lists several things you are supposed to do, voting is not one of them.
I Timothy 2: 1-4 says, "Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth."
Does that mean you shouldn't vote? Of course not. Our nation has given us the privilege to cast a vote for those in authority. If you want to vote, vote. Do not shame those who choose not to partake. But also ask yourself as you are standing in the voting booth, why are you voting? Do you really think any fallen individual will be able to make things better if given the authority by the powers that be? Where is your hope pinned? Is it on your candidate or the One who is over all?
There's an old hymn we used to sing in church that is one of my favorite driving songs. You know the songs. You are alone and praying as you drive then you burst out in praise to the Creator of the universe. I think it might be a good song for everyone to hum while they are casting their vote. If change is what people are wanting, then Maranatha is what should be on our lips as we wait for the day that He will rule and reign. It's getting really close.
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
O soul are you weary and troubled
No light in the darkness you see
There's light for a look at the Savior
And life more abundant and free
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace
His word shall not fail you he promised
Believe him and all will be well
Then go to a world that is dying
His perfect salvation to tell
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace
O soul are you weary and troubled
No light in the darkness you see
There's light for a look at the Savior
And life more abundant and free
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace
